I’ve Made Up My Mind, I Ain’t Wastin’ No More Time

I am so clearly bad about posting, it’s just sad. The strike was for one day, it’s not an excuse.

And it’s not like I’m done here. I am constantly having ideas for posts, for things to share, for new features to try! When I watch something, I end up thinking in terms of how I would write it up on this blog,  yet I don’t stop and take the time to actually do so.  Pathetic. And the more time that passes, the harder it seems to start again.  Not to mention that I always feel that I need to reintroduce myself, to recommit to you, dear reader, and pledge to try harder, to be better.

I suppose my thinking I need an introduction is really just an attempt to take a moment to transition from silence to starting again, so it doesn’t come out of nowhere. I am aware that I’ve been bad. I’m calling after too long, wondering how best to catch you up, awkwardly hoping you remember me and worrying that you don’t.

But screw that. It’s a new year, so let’s just kick this pig.

I’m not going to give you any pledges because who knows what will happen.

But I can start again.

This is my transition.

Here I go.

The 2011 Oscar Best Picture Nominees, or Some Fun Stuff to Click On and an Exciting Announcement from Me!

Oscar season is upon us and, as I missed writing this on the day of the nominee annoucements due to the aformentioned plague/packing-of-everything-I-owned, I am writing about it now.

The big show is coming up on February 27th and, now that I have cable,* I definitely plan on watching.  I think there is a great field of nominees this year, particularly in the Best Picture category.  The 10 choices are diverse, covering many different styles and deserving of the honor for different reasons, and will make for an interesting race.  I don’t think it’s a shoe-in for any one film.  Ladies and gentlemen, we have a real ballgame, and here is your lineup:

  1. Black Swan
  2. The Fighter
  3. Inception
  4. The Kids Are Alright
  5. The King’s Speech
  6. 127 Hours
  7. The Social Network
  8. Toy Story 3
  9. True Grit
  10. Winter’s Bone

Personally, I have seen 4 of the 10, noted in bold.  Maybe not great for a film blogger (or whatever I am), but such is life.  How many have you seen?

Need to catch up on a few of big 10, but don’t have time to run out to a theatre?  Well, let me help give you a quick summary… that is to say, let me give you links to some other people’s awesome creative quick summaries.  Your choices are:

Best Picture Nominees as Acted Out by Small Children

(These are pretty amazing.  As a huge fan of Sportsnight, the Aaron Sorkin dialogue joke in The Social Network video makes me smile inside)

(If I had to pick a winner based on these pictures alone, it would totally be 127 Hours, the most interesting…um…diorama(?) by far.)

As for real written summaries, of both these movies and the many other categories available, let me recommend:

The LAMB Devours the Oscars

The Large Association of Movie Blogs is featuring an article a day on each of the categories and each of the Best Picture nominees from the day after the nominations are announced until the day before the big show.

And not only is this a place to see some great Oscar writing/predictions/mockery, but also…

are you ready for it?…

this is my big announcement moment…

here we go…

That’s right, stay tuned for my upcoming post on Best Picture Nominee The King’s Speech.

Woohoo!  February is already more interesting, right?

*Meaning that Time Warner finally came to set it up and also that I have spent the last…oh goodness…7-8 years without TV.  I did have a TV in the physical sense and I watched a lot of DVDs.  Repeatedly.  And I am a master of Netflix Instant Watch and internet TV watching.  Yes, this is probably a large part of why I am the way I am.

Happy New February! (and happy very slightly noteworthy blog landmark)

So it is 2011.

It did not start out exactly as I had planned, with January promises and resolutions to write more.  In fact, January flew by in two large events:

1. I got the plague.  Okay, maybe not the plague, but I was very sick.  I am fine, but I was seriously out for the count for 2 weeks.

2. I moved apartments.  Seeing as #2 was postponed and thrown off track by #1, there was a LOT that had to happen at the end of the month and all concentration went into figuring life out.  And not at all into making resolutions or writing more.

But I am better, I am moved, and we even finally have internet in the new apartment.

So all hail February!  It is here, it is exciting, and now things can start happening!

Prepare for a new year.  A whole new February.*

And I am noting this new year in my 50th post on this blog!  Yes, that’s sad, but it’s a landmark nonethless.  And it’s February.  Bring on the writing!

*Yeah, okay, it’s halfway over.  But whatever… Happy Valentine’s Day!  Personally, I am watching a Bones marathon.  Nothing like skulls and rotting flesh to celebrate love.

Let’s Get Rockin’!

You knew I was going to do it again, right?  I went out of town one more time and then came back to a “part-time” gig that became ALL-CONSUMING for the last couple of weeks.  Clearly, I haven’t quite figured out the whole “balance” thing yet.

But that is all done, and I am excited to re-commit to you, dear readers, and to this blog.  Really.  I mean it.

If you still feel slighted, then just keep watching Kevin Kline hanging John Cleese out a window.  It certainly makes me feel better.

If, however, you are ready to journey with me into the unknown and possibly sporadic world of me writing stuff here… well…

*Okay, maybe not as dramatic as I had hoped.  Just picture the moment where Jack Black yells, “LET’S GET ROCKIN’!!!” It’s what I hear in my head every time, but I can’t find that clip.

What Did I Miss?

I’m back.

Once again, I was gone for much of the month of August and the beginning of September.  I’m sorry that I didn’t let you know in advance.  I’d have sent a postcard, but I didn’t have your address.  My trip was extended on rather short notice (a business trip!  for a writer!  yippee!), but still.  Per usual, I was neglectful.  But I am back, with ideas and excitement and new galoshes and jet lag.

So what have a missed?

I was not on the internet much, so I don’t know what’s been happening.  I did manage to see Eat Pray Love in the theatre.  Who am I kidding, it can’t be gone yet, it’d be too popular.  But I don’t think the quality of the movie itself warrants a super long run.  I am not really a fan of the movie version.  If you’re interested, I can go into it.

I showed my mom how Netflix Instant Watch works on my laptop and we watched two episodes of Fawlty Towers.  Because the hotel TV choices sucked.  And just because.

I hung out with a friend who works in Hollywood.  We talked about movies.  That counts.

And I did get to watch movies in our family friend’s home movie theatre, and I mean the type with your own personal recliner and a screen that lowers from the ceiling and a popcorn machine (and a creepy mannequin in pajamas in the back row for some reason).  The first night, I introduced my mom to Galaxy Quest (YAY!), and the second night we saw To Live, a great Chinese movie from 1994 by Yimou Zhang, the guy who went on to direct Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, and more.

The trip was great, but I’m back home, at my desk, laptop ready to go, and- wait, WHAT??  IMDB got an update?!  When did that happen???  I don’t quite know what to do with myself.  The pictures…they’re so huge!  And the stars (the ones for rating)…gigantic!  And the format is…different.  I am hesitant, but hopeful.  And a dork.

What else has been changing out here on the interweb?

And how was your August?

Thank you, Total Film, and Welcome!

Thank you so much to Total Film for including me in their newsletter yesterday as one of “3 Cool Movie Blogs to Visit”!

Because of you I am receiving previously unheard of levels of visitor traffic and your recommendation is exciting and flattering and much appreciated.  (It really is my birthday on Sunday, so thank you for my early present.  Well done, you.)

Also, thank you to the LAMB (Large Associationg of Movie Blogs) for helping me to be findable in the first place – if you want movie blogs, that is the place to find them (over 550 and counting!) and a wonderful community.

For those of you who are not finding this site through that newsletter and want to check it out (mom, I mean you), click here.

And if you are visiting 10 Things I Hate* About Your Movie for the first time, welcome!  Please note: the articles are not always things that I “hate,” hence the asterisk – sometimes they are things I “love” or “like” or just “10 things.”  The point being that I just love discussing movies and my thoughts on them, and on entertainment in general.  And I discovered that I like writing in lists.

I should also let you know that this blog is more about critiques than reviews and I may be discussing films without much summary, in their entirety, and with the “assumption” that the reader has also seen the movie (or that they are interested in reading on anyway).  This means that there will be spoilers, and while I will give periodic warnings, please tread carefully.  I do not want to ruin the end of the movie/tv show/book/play for you.  (Though I can tell you now that it was that guy.  The one on the left.)

Okay, enough sounding like an acceptance speech or sales pitch of some kind.  Bring on the lists!
